Gen Z brides are rewriting the red bridal rulebook

Corsets, craft and colour play is giving the traditional red wedding lehenga a high fashion glow up

Entrepreneur and recent bride, Karishma Kirpalani headed to her pheras in a gorgeous sweetheart-neckline choli and midriff-baring red lehenga. While actor and designer, Kritika Kamra wore a simple but stunning sindoori red Chanderi sari for her intimate at-home rooftop wedding. And actor Nupur Sanon, chose a ombre-toned red lehenga for her pheras and a coral-red blazer sari, both from Manish Malhotra for her wedding. The thing we’re loving about the new Indian red bride, is how they showcase completely different readings of the same colour, paying homage to tradition while giving it their own unique spin.

We may be in the era of the pastel and ivory bride, but the red bride has proved time and again that she’s not going anywhere. All she needed was to rethink the one-note version of the typical red bridal lehenga. Today's bride is wearing red on her own terms–playing with shade, the silhouette, the craft, and the styling to find the one that feels most like her. Deep crimson for the maximalist bride, bright scarlet for the fashion one, dabka and gota patti for the bride who wants to feel the craft in every inch, and the odd red anarkali that is making us question why we ever limited it to lehengas in the first place. Same colour palette, entirely different personalities, and that is exactly what makes it the most exciting bridal choice of the season.

The heirloom red

The red that needs no explanation. Zardozi embroidery in organzas and silks, with the kind of detailing that rewards every close-up. Be it sari or lehenga, these beauties are ceremony-ready, phera-approved, and the version that photographs beautifully under any light. Classic but with a designer twist.

The craft red

For the bride who loves her colour as much as she loves her craft. Threadwork, gota patti, dabka, zardozi, tilla, gara and so on–there’s a story and history in every stitch and weave. Perfect for the bride looking for something that’s big on personality, strikingly photogenic and an instant personal heirloom.

The fashion red

Corsets, drapes and contemporary silhouettes with couture construction. This is the red bridal look that matches your red soles. For the slightly unconventional bride looking for her phera-meets-runway moment.

The unexpected red

The jacket lehenga, the Anarkali or a statement sari. For the unpredictable bride, red doesn't have to mean one silhouette or look anymore. You’re here to have fun with what the bridal red means.
