Last week the Lyst Index, a ranking of the hottest items around the globe, came out, and let’s just say our footwear obsessions this year are definitely not normal.

On top of the list was The Row’s Dune rubber flip-flop. The main difference between the Dune and your regular home chappals? These retail for an eye-watering $690. With everyone from actor Jonathan Bailey to model Kendall Jenner rocking a pair, internet buzz around this overpriced slipper has peaked, making us all crave our own pair of skinny slip-ons.

But this wasn’t the only surprising footwear revelation. Number five on the Lyst Index was the Vibram V-Soul flats, those freaky, grippy shoes that are meant to duplicate the feeling of being barefoot. They were followed by another wild card, the Isabel Marant Bekket hidden-wedge sneaker, a shoe that was first launched in 2011 and has made a comeback along with other 2000s-era trends, like low-rise jeans and flower hair clips. Also on the line-up was Prada’s low-profile Re-Nylon sneaker and ballet flats by Ancient Greek Sandals. Clearly this year we’re prioritising silhouettes that are sporty yet low-key. These are everyday styles that don’t need a special occasion, which makes sense in a way, especially if they’ve got a ridiculous price tag.

For more thoughts on what we’re buying and obsessing over, check out what’s on The Nod this week.
