The last few days have offered plenty of eye candy for those of us who like to watch out for how celebrities and their ilk wear the latest runway fashions. There was the US Open, which just concluded over the weekend, a masterclass in preppy style. Then the glamour of the Venice Film Festival, and last night, the chaos agent that is the MTV VMAs, where looks ranged from Doja Cat in a kitschy Balmain mini and edible lipstick accessory to girl group Katseye marking the return of the conical bra via Dolce & Gabbana.

Through all the events, there was one silhouette that quietly recurred—the ’60s-style shift dress. Emma Watson wore two—a monogram Gucci and a lime-green Emilia Wickstead—while getting papped at the film festival. Olivia Munn chose a pristine white shift by Australian brand P Johnson, perfectly appropriate for tennis season. And last night at the VMAs, Tyla styled a vintage Chanel top from the brand’s spring/summer 1993 collection like it was an itsy-bitsy minidress. Let’s just say it was ‘same same but different’ from the other mod-inspired looks.

The shift dress is the answer to many of our fashion woes. Wear it with bare legs and a little kitten heel for a date. Swap the heels for a loafer if you’ve got a busy day of meetings. When it gets a little cooler, add tights, boots, and a cute pullover. If you’re looking for your own version, consider these Twiggy-esque options: Khaite, Sandro, or even Mango.
