Bridal makeup isn’t just about looking flawless—it’s about radiating confidence, elegance, and that elusive ‘lit-from-within’ glow. But achieving a picture-perfect look isn’t just about piling on the best products. It’s about smart techniques, skin prep and knowing what not to do.

We got the inside scoop from popular celebrity make-up artist Puneet Saini, who’s worked her magic on some of the most stunning brides including Bollywood A-listers Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma. Take notes.

The biggest skin-prep mistakes to avoid

Last-minute skincare experiments: Your wedding day is not the time to gamble with new skincare products. Swapping out your usual routine for trendy serums or last-minute facials can lead to unexpected breakouts, redness, or irritation—none of which you want on the most photographed day of your life. To ensure your skin is at its best, start your bridal skincare prep at least 3–6 months in advance. This allows your skin to adjust to any new products, build resilience, and achieve a naturally healthy glow.

Aggressive facials or peels close to D-day: Professional treatments can be game-changers for your skin, but timing is key. Deep facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments require a recovery period, as they can cause temporary redness, peeling, or sensitivity. Schedule your last intense facial at least 2–3 weeks before the wedding, allowing your skin to fully heal and reveal its refreshed glow. If you’re considering a completely new treatment, test it at least two months in advance to rule out any negative reactions.

Not hydrating enough: Dehydrated skin is one of the biggest culprits behind cakey, patchy makeup. Lack of moisture can cause foundation to cling to dry patches or settle into fine lines, ruining that seamless bridal glow. Use a lightweight moisturiser and consider a hydrating mask in the days leading up to your wedding.

Pro tricks to keep your bridal glow fresh, flawless and Insta-worthy all day long

Hydrate and prime: The key to flawless, long-lasting makeup starts with the right skin prep. Begin with a hydrating moisturiser that suits your skin type, ensuring a smooth and plump base. Follow up with a luminous primer to add radiance and grip to your makeup, helping it stay put throughout the day. A well-moisturised and primed canvas prevents foundation from settling into fine lines or appearing cakey.

Apply thin layers: Less is more when it comes to make-up longevity. Instead of applying thick layers of foundation, concealer, or blush all at once, build up product gradually. Blend each layer seamlessly before adding more to maintain a natural, skin-like finish while avoiding heaviness or patchiness. This technique also ensures your make-up stays fresh and flexible rather than settling into creases or melting away.

Set strategically: Powdering the entire face can make your make-up look flat or overly matte. Instead, focus on setting only the areas that tend to get oily—typically the T-zone, around the nose, and under the eyes. Finish with a setting spray to melt the layers together and lock in a natural, radiant finish.

Layer smartly: When working with cream and powder formulas, order matters. Start with cream-based blush and bronzer to create a seamless, dewy flush of colour. Once blended, lightly set with a complimentary powder formula to enhance longevity while maintaining a fresh, glowing complexion.

Go for long-wear formulas: Opt for waterproof mascaras, smudge-proof eyeliners, and transfer-resistant lipsticks to ensure your makeup lasts through heat, humidity, or long hours, advises Saini. Long-wear formulas provide durability without the need for constant touch-ups, keeping your look intact from day to night.

Refresh, don’t overload: Instead of continuously adding layers of powder or product throughout the day, which can lead to a cakey appearance, use blotting papers to absorb excess oil without disturbing your base. Follow up with a hydrating facial mist to bring back a fresh, radiant glow while keeping your makeup lightweight and breathable.

Bonus tips for that airbrushed effect

Use the right tools: The tools you use can make or break your make-up application. A damp beauty sponge is perfect for achieving a natural, skin-like finish. It absorbs excess product while seamlessly pressing foundation and concealer into the skin. If you’re looking for more coverage, opt for a buffing brush with densely packed bristles. It helps to blend foundation in circular motions, building coverage while still maintaining a smooth, airbrushed effect.

Tap, don’t swipe: When applying foundation, concealer, or cream products, always use stippling (tapping) motions rather than dragging or swiping, as this method ensures even blending without creating streaks or disrupting the layers underneath. For a seamless, natural look, extend your blending beyond just your face—gently buff the product into your ears, jawline, and neck to ensure there are no visible lines of demarcation.

6 quick fixes between events so you don’t need a full redo

  • Start by dabbing away excess oil with blotting paper, focusing on the T-zone. Then, lightly dust on a translucent powder to mattify shine without making your makeup look heavy or cakey.
  • A few spritzes of setting spray or a hydrating mist instantly refresh your makeup, giving your skin a dewy boost while locking everything in place. This is especially great if you’ve been dancing or spending time outdoors.
  • Instead of layering on foundation, just touch up key areas. Use a small brush or your fingertip to dab concealer under the eyes, around the nose, or on any redness for a fresh, even complexion.
  • Brighten tired eyes by reapplying eyeliner for definition, blending any creased or faded eyeshadow, and giving your lashes a quick curl for an instant wide-awake effect. A swipe of mascara can also help open up the eyes.
  • Wipe off any faded or smudged lipstick, apply a nourishing lip balm to prevent dryness, and then reapply your chosen lip shade. For extra longevity, blot with a tissue and layer on another coat.
  • Revive dull skin with a hint of highlighter on the high points of your face—cheekbones, brow bones, and the bridge of your nose. This adds a fresh, radiant finish that catches the light beautifully in photos.

Hacks for long-lasting lipstick

  • Exfoliate with a lip scrub and apply a hydrating balm to create a smooth, flake-free base.
  • Outline and fill in your lips with a matching lip liner to create a budge-proof foundation for your lipstick.
  • Apply lipstick in thin layers, blot with a tissue, and repeat for a rich, long-lasting colour payoff.
  • Hold a tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent powder on top to lock in colour without drying out your lips.
  • Matte and liquid lipsticks tend to last longer than creamy or glossy formulas—perfect for all-day wear.
  • Oily foods break down lipstick faster, so be mindful of what you eat if you want your lip colour to stay put.
  • Use a straw to drink without smudging or transferring lipstick onto your glass.
  • Instead of swiping on more lipstick, gently press it into your lips with your fingertip for a seamless refresh.
