"Rather than imposing a design upon the stone, our artisans work with it, allowing its unique character to guide the process," shares Rhea Poddar Loyalka, Director, Ma Passion. What first inspired you to build a brand around handcrafted stone creations?
“The inspiration came from a quiet realisation that some of India's most extraordinary artistic traditions were slowly fading from view. Gemstone carving is an art passed down through generations, with knowledge, skill, and tradition handed from one artisan to the next. Yet despite its remarkable heritage, it had very little contemporary platform or recognition.
Ma Passion was born from the desire to bring this extraordinary art into the spotlight once again, presenting it to a new generation of collectors and connoisseurs, and an ode to my parents being passionate collectors of gemstone carvings.”
Could you take us through that journey—from sourcing the material to the intricate process of hand carving and finishing each piece?
“Every Ma Passion creation begins with the search for the gemstone itself. We travel across the world, working with trusted mines, collectors to source rough gemstones that are exceptional not only in their rarity, but also in their colour, character, and potential.
Once selected, each gemstone is studied before the carving begins. Unlike marble or wood, gemstones are unforgiving. Every natural inclusion, variation in colour, and internal structure must be understood and respected. Rather than imposing a design upon the stone, our artisans work with it, allowing its unique character to guide the process.
The carving itself can take months, and in some cases, years. Every detail is shaped entirely by hand by our team of master artisans. The final stages involve meticulous finishing and polishing, revealing the gemstone's natural depth, luster, and beauty.”
