Inspired by our story on the costumes of the HBO show I Love LA (now streaming on JioHotstar), I spent the weekend binging on the Rachel Sennott-starrer and, like costume designer Christina Flannery, was left wishing that I had been as cutely dressed in my twenties. The comedy about a crew of messy, co-dependent friends feels exactly like how a permanently online, fashion-obsessed crew of Gen Zers working in media would dress—always hot, always photo-ready, and a scattering of low-key designer apparel with plenty of vintage. One bag, in particular, was the plot point of an entire episode—the Balenciaga Le City, formerly known as the Motorcycle bag (we already called out the return of the Y2K-era It bag). When it first launched in 2001, the perfectly slouchy, studded tote was beloved by women like Kate Moss. Fast forward to the present when Charli XCX had an updated version by her side during the Brat tour. Clearly it’s a bag that’s transcended ages, seamlessly shifting from one generation of It girls to another. The size is perfect, not too big to look like you’re shifting home, but roomy enough to hold a tablet, phone, keys, even a snack. Now to find my own version, preferably from a vintage reseller. While I go hunting online, why not check out some of our favourite reads from The Nod for the week?
