Move over, Love Story and all that talk of ’90s minimalism. Instead, I’m currently obsessed with films and TV shows that offer a more joyful, chaotic vision of the world. I’m talking about Margo’s Got Money Troubles, where there were alien costumes and lace bodysuits galore, or the recently released I Love Boosters, a surreal crime comedy about a group of shoplifters set in a world of bright monochromatic looks and pink wigs. Over the weekend I also watched One of Them Days (2025), the Keke Palmer- and SZA-led buddy comedy about two broke roommates looking to muster up rent money; while the film’s chaotic hijinks kept me hooked, it was the outfits I couldn’t stop looking at. From Palmer’s neon green Poster Girl spandex set to SZA’s Fubu and Reebok sportswear, the fashion reflected their lives as cool, confident (but not exactly rich) LA girls. They wore thrift store and fast fashion finds, bandanas to hide bad hair days, hot-girl dresses, and stacks of mismatched jewels. My particular favourite: the oversized, heart-shaped hoops by jeweller Simone I Smith that Palmer’s character, Dreux, wore through the film. When the world is so bleak, another Calvin Klein polo neck isn’t likely to brighten up my day, whereas a pair of giant gold hoops and two girls just out to drink hot Cheeto martinis might.
