Let me guess: you are scrolling through this newsletter against the background of episode three of Bridgerton season four or maybe you are catching up on The Pitt. Well, you are probably not the only one. Second Screen Viewing has been observed to be the new way content is consumed. Watching TV, once meant to be without distractions, has become a background activity. According to a BBC post, actor Jameela Jamil even claims streamers are asking actors to simplify the plot so viewers will be able to follow along while they browse on their phones. Maybe…
Maybe not. At least that’s not what I gathered yesterday at Netflix’s #NextonNetflix lineup announcement. The platform, which completed 10 years in India, has queued up a bouquet of shows and movies. It’s very India-coded—from its first Telugu series, Super Subbu, about a totally unlucky teacher who gets stuck teaching sex education in a small town, and a multi-starrer drama, Family Business, with Anil Kapoor, Vijay Varma, and our cover star Rhea Chakraborty in the lead, to another original series about the Kargil war’s Operation Safed Sagar, starring Jimmy Shergill, Oni Sen, and Siddharth, among others. And these are just a few from the long, solid list that puts India at the centre of its story. You can expect to watch everyone from Madhuri Dixit, Neena Gupta, and Saif Ali Khan, to Rasika Dugal, Akshaye Khanna, Dia Mirza, and Konkana Sen Sharma on your screens.
So, instead of giving into the temptation of Second Screen Viewing, I suggest you binge-watch your new favourite show at a Starbucks nearby (for Mumbai peeps only). Why Starbucks? I’ll ask why not, if you can get TwentySeven Bakehouse’s fresh selection of baked goods, salads, and sandwiches with your caffeine fix following their recent collaboration.
