This (and every) summer, a hardshell cabin bag is your best friend

Why let a shapeless trolley suitcase with glitchy wheels ruin your airport look?

With summer in full swing, it’s likely that you’re planning a holiday while convincing yourself you need five outfit changes a day, only to end up wearing the same bikini, linen shorts, and oversized button-down you’ve had on since morning. Which is why I’m a firm believer in the power of a small but mighty cabin bag.

As someone who refuses to check in their luggage—partly because I don’t want to lug around my tote on my shoulder and partly because I don’t like to wait at baggage claim—I’ve become a hardshell cabin bag loyalist. They’re easier to wipe down after being dragged through airports than soft suitcases, fit neatly into overhead bins, and are way less stressful to slide through terminals while trying to catch a red-eye flight. Four-wheel spinners, I’ve come to realise, are also easier to manoeuvre down narrow airplane aisles.

The best cabin bags are lightweight but sturdy, functional without looking boring, and smooth enough to roll one-handed while clutching an iced coffee, passport, and boarding pass. Below, the best-looking carry-ons to invest in right now, including a few that are on sale.

Wingman cabin suitcase, Nappa Dori, ₹28,000

If Wes Anderson ever designed luggage, it would probably look like this. The vintage-inspired leather details and chrome-finished TSA lock make it look like you’re ready to board the Orient Express. At 4.25 kgs, it is a bit heavy, but aesthetically? Unbeatable.

Chatelet Air 2.0 cabin suitcase, Delsey Paris, ₹30,000

Another vintage-inspired design, this bag makes you look like the kind of person who spends every summer in the south of France. It has a TSA combination lock, soft handles, and a USB socket so you can charge your phone on the go, and the brand’s patented Securitech 2 zip closure system ensures your goods are safe even if you do decide to check it in. The best part? It weighs only 2.9 kgs.

Essential Cabin suitcase, Rimowa, ₹93,000

Everyone wants a silver Rimowa they can slap stickers onto, but the new glossy orange and magenta colourways are so much more fun. At 3.2 kgs, the Essential Cabin is surprisingly lightweight. Plus, the stage-free telescopic handle is rave-worthy. It’s a bit heavy on the wallet, but if it’s any consolation, it also comes with a matching leather luggage tag and a sticker.

Hard carry-on suitcase, Muji ₹14,990

This is the suitcase I’ve been using non-stop for the last three years for long-weekend getaways and quick work travel. It’s minimal, functional, and has a genius wheel-lock button that prevents it from rolling away on inclines while you’re browsing through duty-free. The built-in TSA lock on this, though, has a key. If you end up shopping on your trip, no worries—it’s expandable. At only 2.9 kgs, it’s a godsend for chronic overpackers who insist they’re packing light.

The Cabin Overnighter luggage, Mokobara, ₹18,999

Are you someone who won’t stop working even while on a weekend getaway? This little bag features a front tech compartment that can fit a laptop, an iPad, and chargers. Made with a German polycarbonate body and a keyless TSA-approved lock, it weighs 3.19 kgs and is currently on sale for ₹10,999.

19 Degree front-access expandable carry-on, Tumi, ₹90,000

The butter yellow and thyme green shades from the Mediterranean Escape collection are gorgeous, but this dusty pink-clay colour might be the prettiest of the lot. The front-access compartment is ideal for stashing swimwear, a cardigan, or anything you need to get your hands on mid-transit without fully unpacking your life at the gate. At 3.9 kgs, it’s slightly heavier and a lot more expensive, but the monogram patch and ribbed shell soften the blow.

Twins Pro hard luggage, Tommy Hilfiger, ₹10,499

The two-tone colour-blocking gives this cabin suitcase a playful, sporty feel. It’s also just under 3 kgs, which means you can save your baggage allowance for actual clothes instead of the suitcase itself. The ₹6,299 sale price on Bagline is too good to pass up.

Iris Green cabin hard luggage, Assembly, ₹7,499

This gorgeous green shade is not just pleasant to look at, it’s also very Instagram story-friendly. It weighs only 3 kgs, includes packing cubes, and looks far more expensive than its ₹4,999 sale price tag suggests.

Evoa Z Spinner 55/20, Samsonite, ₹22,400

This is perhaps the sleekest suitcase of the lot, and it has a gorgeous brushed texture on the exterior. Beyond the anti-theft zippers, a wet pouch, and antimicrobial lining, there’s even a concealed hanging hook on the back for your jacket or a small tote, a considerate touch for anyone who has ever juggled too many airport things at once. At 3.5 kgs, it’s sturdy without being painfully heavy.
