We’re all guilty of a little harmless escapism every now and then. Whether it’s rewatching episodes of Selling Sunset and dreaming about owning that mansion with an infinity pool someday or turning our Instagram Saved Folder into a moodboard of our interior décor ideas “just in case” we land that Manhattan penthouse overlooking Central Park, we’ve all indulged our fantasies a fair bit.
In fact, we do it so much that American financial services company Empower has coined a term for this very hobby: ‘dreamscrolling’. A worthy nemesis to doomscrolling that was born during the Covid pandemic, and is, unfortunately, still very much a part of our online lives, this one presents a welcoming counterpoint. Doomscrolling is depressing and anxiety-inducing, and also kind of pointless; dreamscrolling, on the other hand, is a fun little activity that, at worst, gives you a chance to look at beautiful things, and at best, offers a wishful form of manifesting. I like to think of it as my curation of things I definitely can’t afford but wouldn’t mind having around.
Maybe it’s the result of putting together far too many vision boards or obsessively lurking in all the deepest design corners of the internet, but I’ve already got a list of all the furniture and décor that I’m going to put into my fantasy dream home.
