The new status bag is...reversible

Make way for the new wave of ‘inside out’ holdalls

Whether it’s the video of Jane Birkin emptying her Birkin onto the streets of Paris that is always doing the rounds, or the hours of content based on what’s inside celebrity totes, we know that everyone loves a good ‘In the Bag’ video. Now, after overturning the stuff in the bag, the next step seems to be turning the handy sack itself inside out.

Case in point: Louis Vuitton’s newly released Neverfull Inside Out, a fresh take on the beloved Neverfull tote that has been around for 17 years. The latest iteration is reversible, which essentially means you get two designer bags for the price of one. Zendaya has already been spotted carrying the black grained-leather version, which also comes in tan, and there’s even a full textile version with the French maison’s instantly recognisable monogram canvas on one side and striped fabric in vibrant hues of red, yellow, or pink on the other. It has hooks allowing it to shape-shift into a trapezoidal hobo bag for when you want to switch things up. And there’s a more compact version that comes with a removable strap, allowing you to transform it into a crossbody for when you want to go hands-free.

On the Hermès spring/summer 2025 runway last month, artistic director Nadège Vanhée sent out a flipped-out Birkin that featured elements like the flap closure on the exterior while the sangles (bag strap) and the turnlock went on the interior. Aptly named the Birkin à l’envers (upside-down Birkin), this version playfully reveals the craftsmanship that goes into creating the iconic bag. The design was inspired by the idea of skipping the final step as Hermès bags are crafted and assembled by artisans inside out and flipped right at the end.

Another It bag that’s been given the inside out treatment is The Row’s Margaux. Our favourite version of the giant tote features a canvas bottom half and a leather top panel—just as you would see on the inside of a traditional Margaux bag—as well as an outer zipper and side buckles. Like everything that the Olsen sisters create, the bag is such a hot seller that you'll be hard pressed to find it online.

If you’re wondering whether these bags are worth the investment, both the Birkin and Neverfull maintain a high resale value. But you don’t need to shell out your life’s savings to jump on the trend. For those looking for a small-ish inside out bag, look no further than Brazilian designer Isa Kauffman’s cult accessories label Dentro (Charli XCX and Kylie Jenner are fans.) The Italian-made bags feature unique accents like exposed foam and long, hanging threads that add character to the accessories. Some of the styles even have the factory’s cutting pattern instruction printed on them, putting construction front and centre. You’re welcome!
