You know the 4Cs. But do you know how old a natural diamond really is? Or that India was once the world’s only source of them? As conversations around diamonds evolve, so does what we know about them. Here are 11 facts—from billion-year timelines to blockchain tracking—that make the case for looking beyond the sparkle.

  1. Only a natural diamond can be called a diamond now. As of January 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established a standardised framework for diamond nomenclature across India.
  2. The formation of a diamond takes billions of years at precise pressures and temperatures, which makes them innately rare.
  3. Your average natural diamond is 1 to 3 billion years old; that’s 42 million years older than dinosaurs.
  4. Just as no two fingerprints are the same, similarly, every natural diamond is unique and one of a kind.
  5. There’s a finite amount of natural diamonds in the world—an exercise ball will accommodate all the 1-carat natural diamonds recovered annually, while a basketball could hold all the 5-carat diamonds—making it an unbelievably rare gemstone.
  6. The first natural diamonds were found in India—in alluvial deposits around the Deccan plateau or the Golconda region. Mining here began over 3,000 years ago, and for a long time this region was the only source of the stone. Many years later, in the 18th century, diamonds were found in Brazil, in an area that was fittingly named Diamantina. Fast forward a 100 years later, and around the time that sources in India and Brazil started depleting, a fresh supply was found in South Africa in the 1860s.
  7. The history of diamond cutting reflects the rich history of the gemstone. One of the earliest diamond cuts was the table cut, referring to its flat-top facet, with evidence of this style surviving from the 13th century onwards. One of the earliest mentions of diamond cutting comes from an Indian text, Agastimata, a document from the same century that proves this timeline.
  8. In 2000, the diamond industry established the Kimberly Process, a global certification scheme that outlines the rules of trade in rough diamonds to ensure ethical sourcing and responsible and transparent business practices.
  9. It’s getting easier to trace a diamond’s provenance, thanks to new blockchain technologies. Programmes like Tracr, the first digital tracking system developed by De Beers, allow mine-to-store tracking, making it easier to understand if a diamond is ethically mined and real.
  10. There are tools to help differentiate laboratory-grown diamonds from natural ones. These instruments read details like growth pattern, nitrogen content, fluorescence, and spectral signature to securely identify a natural diamond. And even if you don’t have the tools to prove it yourself, luckily the GIA has already started differentiating between the two with separate grading systems (natural diamonds are graded according to the 4Cs, while laboratory-grown diamonds will get simple terms like ‘premium’ or ‘standard’) to help mark the distinction.
  11. Buying a natural diamond funds community. Close to one-third of the world’s largest diamond producers’ workforce are women and, to take things a step further, De Beers, the world’s biggest mining company, has partnered with UN Women to fund entrepreneurial programmes such as EntreprenHER, which supports micro entrepreneurs across Africa. Other examples include the company Lucara Diamond, which supports women-led farming communities in Botswana, or Malabar Gold & Diamonds’ recent ₹200 crore investment in CSR initiatives across women and youth-led initiatives.
