Summer’s statement swimsuit is actually a one-piece

Smocked, scalloped, strappy or sculpted—there’s one for every mood

It’s time we gave the one-piece swimsuit the respect it deserves. No longer just a modest fallback or something you wear when you “have to swim laps”, today’s one-pieces are doing the absolute most. They’re sexy, sculptural, and sometimes even sun-safe.

Technically speaking, a one-piece is just a bodysuit in water-friendly fabric—which makes it fair game for styling far beyond the pool. Just ask Leandra Medine, who recently made a compelling case for this logic by pairing an array of one-pieces with sheer tops, low-rise jeans, and yes, even a blazer. (It shouldn’t work but it does.) Even on the spring/summer 2025 runways, brands like Chanel, Tory Burch (whose show was held in an Olympic-sized pool), Miu Miu, Chloé and The Attico sent out maillots layered under pleated skirts, shirts, and coats.

Beyond the endless styling opportunities, they’re practical in other ways too. That annoying “no bikinis allowed” policy at your neighbourhood club that feels lifted from a 1950s etiquette manual? Sure, but it doesn’t have to be boring. From halters that plunge to rash guards that won’t make you look like a toddler at the beach, here’s every one-piece worth adding to cart before your vacation sneaks up on you.

Halter nation

Halter-neck swimsuits can be annoying because there will be tugging. But if you’re okay with a little neck tension in the name of style, these are for you. Farm Rio’s black and white number is perfect for a White Lotus-esque vacation. Zara’s leopard-print swimsuit has a plunging V-neck that’s equally flirty and glamourous. Another one with a plunging V-neck is Verandah’s floral one-piece, which features a sweet rosette. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen on your décolletage!

Surface appeal

Textural swimsuits say “I care, but not in a try-hard way”. This Tory Burch one-piece is charming and sensible with its tidy smocking and crisscross straps that tie in the back. Then there’s Missoni’s vibrant piece with lamé viscose lace workmanship that’s almost too pretty to get wet. Hunza G’s Camille is a one-size-fits-most wonder with twisted straps that give it a more elevated, upscale vibe. This one’s a great pick if you’re expecting, or expecting to expect, or spending the day alternating between the pool and the buffet, because the fabric does indeed stretch.

Minimal effort, max impact

Sometimes all you want is clean lines, a good fit, and a hell of a tan. H&M’s high-leg swimsuit delivers on the essentials without breaking the bank. This black and white Toteme swimsuit has minimalist branding (very iykyk) and deep U-back. If you’re in the mood for some fun, this Jean Paul Gaultier number is a trompe-l’oeil masterpiece that turns your torso into a pinstriped optical illusion. Be prepared for double takes.

Surf’s up, but make it fashion

The surf girl has always been cool. Now, she’s also hot. Looking for stylish coverage and extra protection from the sun? Pucci’s swirly Marmo-print swimsuit fabric is made with anti-UV treatment, making it the chicest option for sports sessions in the water. Staud’s Wipeout rash guard is what you wear when you want to look like you might surf but also might just rot on your beach towel reading Ottessa Moshfegh’s newest novel. Prefer a brighter colour? Marysia’s rash guard has an adorable scalloped edge: graceful, useful, and just so damn cute.

Asymmetrical action

Nothing says ‘chic’ like a swimsuit with unexpected angles. Johanna Ortiz’s one-piece features flattering cutouts, a high leg, and a front ring detail that accentuates the waist. Taller Marmo’s one-shoulder swimsuit has a detachable pareo that’s perfect for your next pool party. Mango’s asymmetrical number is your high-street hero—clean, minimal, and sculptural, with a small hardware detail that catches the light and costs less than dinner for two.
