8 Indian hotels where you can room-rot like Gen Z

A new travel survey confirms, staying in and doing nothing is now our favourite getaway. Here, a Nod-approved list of places that offer just that

How often have you come back from a vacation only to desperately need another one to recover from aforementioned vacation? Maybe the last eight days of waking up early, arranging tickets, the wine-ing and dining, picking outfits, coordinating departure times, and ticking things off a list have taken a toll, and you return as exhausted as you’ve ever been. Now picture this: You check into a cosy villa with breathtaking views and only one item on the agenda—doing nothing. Sounds like the perfect getaway? For Gen Z, apparently, it is.

Airbnb recently published its ‘Never the Same: The New Rules of Gen Z Travel in India’ report, which includes an 11-point memo spanning such trends as side-questing and micro-vacations. Our favourite takeaway? Room rotting.

As the term suggests, here your digs are your destination. You travel with no real itinerary except to slow down. Stay in, cherish your immediate surroundings, and do nothing. No queuing up for the viral stracciatella gelato or blowing six months’ worth of savings to get to a steam-filled lake with monkeys that’s already been itinerary-ed to death.

Below, our curated list of boutique hotels, stays, and villas across India to room-rot at your heart’s content:

Unseen, Assagao, Goa

At Unseen Assagao, an 11-key boutique hotel in Goa’s buzziest village right now, you are greeted with a Sunrise cold brew the moment you step in. The rooms here include a coffee cart with an origami coffee maker and a French press, a Marshall speaker to queue your favourite playlist, and a bathtub under a skylight to complete it all. The interiors are minimal and warm, with floral accents on bedsheets and upholstery. If you feel like taking a break from doing nothing, pluck yourself from your comfy palm-tree-patterned bedding and step into an omakase coffee tasting at their in-house cafe, Coffee Culture. If you’re a nightcrawler, you don’t need to step out: their caffeine-forward speakeasy-inspired bar, Uncultured, will fix you with drinks like Nobody’s to Own, a spiced rum coffee liquor cocktail, or Dark Dreams (dark rum, cold brew, orange zest). Can’t decide what to drink? Go for their Zodiac-sign-inspired drink.

If you haven’t already guessed, Unseen takes its coffee seriously. This coffee-first hotel is easy to spot with its earthy terracotta-toned exteriors featuring latticework jaali and lime-washed walls.

Mharo Khet, Manaklao, Rajasthan

How about room-rotting in one of the 10 pink luxurious cottages (each with an entrance foyer, patio, and walk-in wardrobe) on a lush 40-acre farmland on the outskirts of Jodhpur? Husband-wife duo Rajnush Agarwal and Vedika Prasad gave their family farm a new chapter with Mharo Khet, teaming up with French interior designer Pio Coffrant. Here, freshly baked treats (read: a bread basket including the most heavenly banana bread) are delivered right to your doorstep in the morning, while the rest of the day is planned around farm-fresh food. The interiors—featuring stone and wood furniture, mother-of-pearl inlay work, and wool rugs made by local karigars from the neighbouring villages—lend the place a luxurious feel. The block-print art mounted on the walls seals the deal if you are travelling for the aesthetics. Add to this a view of guava orchards from the full-length glass windows of your thoughtfully designed minimalist cottage and you’ll never want to leave.
