The only thing you need to get the table talking this Diwali: Statement spoons

Flatware is anything but flat today. From sculptural coffee spoons to molten-metal dessert servers, here’s what’s stealing the spotlight this festive season

The festive season is back, and so is the urge to host. Kitchens are buzzing, playlists are on standby, and every corner of the table is being fussed over. A few years ago, it was the grazing table that ruled social media with its lavish sprawl of food, fruits and flowers carefully styled to look spontaneous. Then came last year’s fixation with long tables, followed by grander circular ones that seemed to pop up at every Diwali party. They were cinematic, communal, and designed for conversation. This time, the energy feels different. The focus has moved from the scale of the setting to the details that sit on the table.

The way we entertain is changing. Hosts are stepping away from spectacle and leaning into intention. Supper clubs, small-plate dinners, and home-chef gatherings have become the new markers of a good night in. Ether Chocolate’s Prateek Bakhtiani was on to something when he said, “A lot of people have too much food out and it just distracts from the party.” Tables are no longer built around excess but around texture, mood, and story. Which explains why spoons, of all things, have become the object of obsession and the talk of the table.

So, what exactly makes a spoon a statement? It is part sculpture, part sparkle, and part personality. Rosh Mahtani’s Alighieri Totemic Devotion dessert spoons look like relics from another time, uneven and textured, with a quiet beauty that feels handmade. The Villeroy & Boch NewWave Caffè spoons are sleek and modern, their ripple-shaped handles catching the light like moving water. Closer to home, the Nicobar Indus dessert spoons have a warm, brushed finish that feels simple yet deliberate. These are spoons that do not just serve, they perform.

“We started noticing a big shift towards statement spoons earlier this year,” says Delhi-based food and beverage curator Eeshaan Kashyap, who is known for putting together the best laid tables. “We began by offering serving spoons after getting several requests and soon realised it’s a great product because nobody buys just one or two; people usually want sets of six or 12.”

Kashyap believes the small-plate trend is largely driving this attention to detail in our flatware. “A lot of people tell me they don’t want to do something so complicated because they also want to enjoy the party.” The rise of monoportion-style dinners has shifted focus from what is served to how it is served and to the little pieces that frame the food rather than the food itself. “People are moving away from the usual silver or EPNS sets. They want pieces that feel organic, textured, and tactile,” he adds. This move toward a more casual, easygoing dinner setting is also inspiring people to choose statement cutlery, since it instantly elevates the table without requiring elaborate styling or over-the-top design.

Take note: this Diwali, the most memorable tables will not be the biggest or the brightest but the ones that shine in the small, exquisite details. And if you are looking to add that extra touch to your own celebration, we have you covered. From textured brass designs to sculptural modern silhouettes, here are some statement spoons that promise to impress your guests at the next Diwali card party and maybe even steal the spotlight from the mithai.
