Loved ‘Widow’s Bay?’ Here’s what to watch next

A group of centuries-old vampires share a house on Staten Island and, despite all their supernatural powers, are mostly terrible at being vampires. There are ancient rivalries, bloodsucking, familiar drama, and the occasional visit from a vampire council, but the real horror is probably having to live with your roommates forever. Like Widow’s Bay, it knows exactly when to let the spooky stuff play straight and when to completely undercut it with a ridiculous joke.

A body washes up in a small town, and suddenly everyone has a theory. What follows is a murder investigation that is as interested in the town’s eccentric characters as it is in solving the crime. Kate Box and Madeleine Sami play two very different detectives in this dark comedy, which gradually gets bloodier. If your ideal murder mystery comes with a lot of bickering, this is your kind of dead body.

If zombies took over London tomorrow, Shaun would probably be the last person you’d want in charge of the evacuation. Simon Pegg plays a directionless electronics salesman who barely notices the apocalypse beginning around him, while Nick Frost plays his aggressively unhelpful best friend. Edgar Wright’s horror-comedy is gory, silly, and unexpectedly warm, with zombies providing the backdrop for a story about friendship, breakups, and growing up. Naturally, Shaun’s survival plan involves going to the pub and waiting it out.

Grace marries into a ridiculously wealthy family, only to discover on her wedding night that she has to play a traditional family game. Her card says Hide and Seek, but there’s a catch. If she survives until dawn, the family loses its fortune. If they find her first, she dies. This dark comedy takes high-stakes rich-people drama, old-money entitlement, and family dysfunction and turns it into a bloody game of survival.

A satanic sacrifice goes wrong and Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), the hottest girl in school, comes back possessed and hungry for boys. Her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) is understandably less than thrilled. Fox and Seyfried anchor Diablo Cody’s dark horror-comedy, which has gone from misunderstood 2000s release to a full-blown cult classic. Beneath the blood and demon antics is a story about female friendship, jealousy, sexuality, and the complicated business of being a teenage girl.

Bruce Campbell returns as Ash Williams, the chainsaw-handed hero from The Evil Dead, who finds himself back in the middle of a demon problem he thought he’d left behind. The Necronomicon is involved, naturally, and soon Ash is battling Deadites with a chainsaw while trying to save the world. Lucy Lawless and Ray Santiago join him as his reluctant partners in the chaos. The show is properly gory but never too serious, with plenty of dark humour and ridiculous moments thrown into the carnage.
