Whether you’re posting gym fits or dodging paparazzi, grabbing a coffee, or hiding a badly judged haircut, there's one familiar accessory that helps you do it all. One that's evolved from its athletic origins to become a staple in luxury fashion: the baseball cap. Spotted on the streets of New York and New Delhi en masse, and on some of fashion’s favourite It girls including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Suhana Khan, and Gigi Hadid, the baseball cap is enjoying an elevated comeback as the headgear du jour.

The idea of a designer baseball cap is not new. Every model at Celine’s spring/summer 2021 resort show wore a cap while Miu Miu sent out its logo-ed version during the Resort 2020 season. For a while, circa 2023, the hottest designer hat was the Ralph Lauren classic chino cap that shielded the face of famous folks like Kendall Jenner and Taylor Swift from unwanted paparazzi shots. Karisma Kapoor seems to have the same accessory in at least two different colourways while Jennifer Lawrence has four for herself. That same year the Lyst Index reported that caps from Ralph Lauren and Loro Piana were two of the year’s most in-demand luxury products. But since then, many more brands have jumped on to the visored cap trend. Earlier last year Rihanna wore a Dior cap to the brand’s haute couture show no less while for Fall 2024 Tommy Hilfiger sent out a grey wool version. These pricey takes on the normie ‘dad cap’ come with low-key logos, vintage-inspired typography, and in luxurious fabrics like leather or silk. Brands have tapped on to the fact that the normcore topper serves as the perfect entry point to luxury fashion and serves as another low-key way to announce your preferred label (are you a Miu Miu girl or a Burberry stan?).

When it comes to styling your look, a baseball cap brings an instant nonchalance to any outfit. We’re seeing it paired with everything from jeans and a varsity jacket to mini dresses and overcoats. Wear it with your hair loose or with a sleek bun and chunky earrings à la Hailey Bieber. Ultimately, remember, there’s no such thing as a bad hair day when you’ve got a status cap.
