Winter jackets are getting wacky

Quilted, textured, and a little bit quirky—this crop of Indian labels is infusing fun into cold-weather dressing

Karan Johar gets it. So does Rihanna. As does Taylor Swift who has been spotted in a series of headline-worthy coats this past month. All three of them understand the power of a statement outer layer to complete a look. We’re not talking about a boring, oversized blazer that’s become the uniform of those still in the thralls of the quiet luxury aesthetic. Instead, with their current autumn/winter 2024-25 collections, Indian designers are proving that your jackets can come embellished or quilted, printed and embroidered, as a canvas for craft or simply in a playful colourway. Layer them over your jeans and T-shirt or give your sari a global-local twist by throwing on a statement jacket that you cinch at the waist; the styling possibilities are endless.

The dressed-up trench coat

A quintessential transition season layer, the trench coat was a constant across the autumn/winter collections. The Bodice pre-fall 2024 line includes a utilitarian trench made with parachute fabric and the brand’s signature contrast piping detail. Meanwhile, at Rahul Mishra’s Afew, trench coats are printed or embroidered with fanciful florals that are perfect to throw on for events (some of them are even on sale). Naushad Ali’s light-as-air semi-sheer trench in zari tissue is another unique piece that would look gorgeous paired with a strappy dress and heels.

Beyond basic blazers

Brands like Cord (embroidery on sumptuous velvet), Drawn (bold stripes), and November Noon (contrasting wave pattern in silver zari), have created versions of the tailored jacket that are more striking, but just as versatile as any blazer in your wardrobe.

Cosy in quilting

Who doesn’t want to wrap themselves in a layer that feels like your favourite blanket? The vibrant, quilted jackets by Jodi, Doodlage, and Kartik Research invite you to embrace comfort and the joy of clashing prints.

Textured bombers

The sporty, athleisure staple can also be a bit more luxurious and craft-forward. There is Ilk’s fully smocked bomber, Kanika Goyal label’s mushroom-emblazoned hybrid puffer-bomber jacket with ruched sleeves, as well as Three’s fringed number. We love the idea of layering them over a skirt in this season’s preferred hemline—the midi skirt.
