Joey King is a naked-dressing pro

With Practical Magic 2 slated to release on September 11, spooky season is arriving earlier this year. While the film’s main cast (including Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Maisie Williams) has already served a slew of otherworldly looks during the ongoing press tour, Joey King has emerged as its resident naked-dressing pro.

Best known for The Kissing Booth and her continual hair transformations, King has been sporting long, ginger locks while filming Practical Magic 2—the literal cherry on top of her sheer, witchy wardrobe that has been taking shape all year. The actor is not exactly a stranger to showing some (or a lot of) skin. From a sparkly pink Miu Miu moment at the Met Gala and a gothic Elie Saab gown with a plunging lace neckline at the opening of the ‘Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon’ exhibition at the Academy Museum in May, to a lace halter-neck Alessandra Rich maxi dress at Teen Vogue Fest in July, the actor has been embracing long, flowing, and translucent silhouettes for months.

King is joining a long line of It-girls taking part in the rite of passage that is naked dressing. This year particularly has seen stars making a particularly strong case for the trend. Who could forget Lola Tung stepping out in New York in a lavender diaphanous Dilara Findikoglu dress, or Chappell Roan dangling red fabric from her fake nipple piercings at the Grammys?

Over the years, the trend has taken many forms, although the OG for many will be Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday, Mr President” in a nude-illusion rhinestone Jean Louis dress for John F Kennedy in 1962 (yes, the same one Kim Kardashian controversially wore many years later to the 2021 Met Gala). 

King has adopted a rather spectral and whimsical take on the trend, like she’s just apparated from the coven. Working with stylist Jared Eng, the actor floated through the London premiere of the film in an airy butter-yellow custom Miu Miu look. Earlier this summer, the New York leg of the tour brought white lace pieces from emerging designers Nastyamasha and Datt, and a black Mark Gong autumn/winter ’26 skirt that could easily belong in your séance wardrobe.

The naked-dressing trend is seen as a reclamation of sorts of bodily autonomy and agency, a power move against the censorship of the female body. When the Cannes Film Festival banned naked dresses in 2025, the girls took it upon themselves to challenge the rule and came baring it all.

King’s modern-witch wardrobe brings some of that same rebellious energy to the upcoming film’s press tour. Besides, the witch handbook mandates a little rebellion anyway.
