PSA for vintage bag obsessives: the Louis Vuitton X Murakami Speedy is back

All hail the return of the glorious early aughts

You know the bag—the one with the multicoloured LV monogram that was on the arms of every It girl of the aughts. Like all good things from the time, that bag is also making a comeback.

It all started when Marc Jacobs first tapped Japanese artist Takashi Murakami to reimagine the house’s iconic monogram pattern with his distinctive colour-pop palette, during his tenure as artistic director of the house more than two decades ago. First seen on the brand’s spring 2003 runway, these whimsical bags became the literal definition of arm candy with delicious, candy-coloured motifs peppered all over them.

In the years that followed, we spotted various bags from the ongoing collaboration on Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, and even Regina George in the original Mean Girls. Fun fact: For Christmas 2019, Kim Kardashian gifted her sisters and their kids miniature versions of the Multicolore Speedy after a vintage shopping spree in Japan (if only we all were fortunate enough to have Aunty Kim around for Christmas!). But it’s not just the Y2K girlies who were obsessed with these limited-edition gems—it also finds a spot in the collections of Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Alizeh, and house ambassador Zendaya.

To everyone’s dismay, the collaboration was discontinued in 2015 following Jacobs’ departure from the house in 2014. In case you’ve been unsuccessfully scouring resale platforms and vintage marketplaces for a cherry blossom-emblazoned Pochette or a multicoloured nano Speedy, you’re in luck. Louis Vuitton is bringing back the era-defining collab with an extensive re-edition.

The first drop, which will be available to order worldwide on January 1, includes bags, shoes, and accessories like belts and scarves with the Monogram Multicolore motif on black and white backgrounds. The whimsical Superflat Panda, too, makes a reappearance on bags, passport covers, wallets, and even skateboards.

Our favourite from the line-up is, of course, the white Speedy 30 soft bag with the colourful motif. The most practical of the lot, it’s capacious enough to fit all of our daily essentials, including a make-up bag and journal. What makes this bag such an object of desire is not just the fact that its value will most likely increase on the resale market, but also the utility it offers on supple, cuddly leather. It can be worn cross-body or under the arm, and features multiple padlocks and an adorable bow shaped strap. No extra bag charms needed.
