Sheer skirts deserve some more exposure

We’ve seen plenty of sheer skirts on the runway over the past couple of years. This season, in fact, Prada went all in on the skirt, showing 63 variations for its spring/summer 2027 collection. Among them were translucent organza wraps, floral crystal mesh, and glossy plissé technical fabric. “The skirt for me is like a T-shirt,” Miuccia Prada had once said. Over in Paris, Jonathan Anderson at Dior sent out pleated minis and midis in silk mousseline and organza, while Matthieu Blazy’s sheer slips at Chanel came adorned with pearls, beads, and delicate gold chains. They were also spotted at Khaite, Fendi, Gundi Studios, Tom Ford, and Victoria Beckham.

Unlike the naked dresses that regularly make headlines on red carpets, the sheer skirt is no longer just a fashion week novelty. It’s made its way into everyday wardrobes, with Olivia Dean, Dua Lipa, and Dakota Johnson among its celebrity fans, not to mention the street-style set at fashion month. It’s sensual, fun, and a welcome upgrade from your regular pair of jeans for an evening out.

And sporting a sheer skirt doesn’t necessarily mean you have to bare it all. The easiest way in? Pairing it with an oversized shirt that covers your butt. A chunky knit, cardigan, or blazer works just as well if you’d like to balance the transparency with some opacity. Some skirts even come with built-in slips so you don’t have to worry about flashing people on the street. Or you could layer one over a pair of tailored trousers for a grown-up take on the Disney star uniform. For more adventurous dressers who aren’t shy about showing some skin, doubling down with a sheer top or a bra (as is the forecast for 2027) is always an option. As for what to wear underneath? Depending on how cheeky (see what we did there?) you’re feeling, you could do high-waist briefs in a contrasting colour or matching boy shorts or even go all out with no-VPL Stringys.
