Literally everyone’s wearing bandanas this summer

Make the humble accessory your defence against flyaways, bad-hair days, and monotony

You’ve seen it by now: a bright, patterned piece of cotton or silk, folded into a triangle and worn over the crown, knotted low at the nape, turning up on your feed with almost suspicious frequency. Coincidence, or has the bandana suddenly become the only hair accessory anyone with a working Instagram account is wearing this summer? We’re going with the latter.

If the scarf had main character energy below the neck last year—knotted over bikini bottoms as a coverup, tied at the hip over jeans, or doing double duty as the season’s most improvised going-out top—this year, it’s travelled north. Firmly, unmissably, onto our heads.

Call it nonna-core if you like. This season, the aim is to look like a chic grandmother summering on the Amalfi coast. Think a loose linen outfit, oversized sunglasses, a woven basket bag, and a silk square doing all the work up top. It helps that a bandana solves multiple problems at once: it disguises a third-day blowout, keeps flyaways off your face on a humid commute or when the wind picks up, and protects the scalp and hair against sun damage—all in addition to breaking the monotony of a boring outfit.

Dua Lipa set the tone early in the season all through her honeymoon across Italy with a sky-blue silk bandana over her head to brighten up an all-white outfit one day and a navy version paired with a metallic bikini the next. Zendaya was seen wearing a navy and white dotted scarf folded over her bixie during an off-duty outing to a bookstore. Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Ananya Panday, and Kareena Kapoor Khan have all been spotted sporting paisley kerchiefs throughout summer, while Elle Fanning, an early adopter of the look, made a red paisley scarf her secret weapon for a dip in the pool. Ayo Edebiri’s bandanas in The Bear have their own following. Gracie Abrams has even released a bandana as part of merch for her new album. Not bad company to keep. The numbers back up what your feed is already telling you—#bandana has racked up well over 400,000 posts on TikTok this year alone.

As for how to actually wear one: fold a square scarf diagonally into a triangle, place it at your hairline, and tie the ends at the back at the nape, leaving a strand or two of your hair loose to frame the face. Cotton grips best if you’re headed somewhere hot and humid; silk is the better bet for second-day hair or an evening look, where a bit of slip and shine works in your favour.
