The new Boox Go 6 Gen 2 is a prettier alternative to your Kindle

The latest Boox e-reader comes in four very photogenic colours, supports note-taking and multiple reading apps, and might just tempt you away from your Kindle

I’ve been a Kindle loyalist for years, so I’m usually pretty resistant to anything that threatens to pull me out of the Kindleverse. But the Boox Go 6 Gen 2 has arrived with a fairly convincing argument: What if your e-reader could be cute, pocketable, and do a little more than just hold your books?

The latest 6-inch e-reader from Boox, released at the end of June, comes in four shades: custard, plum, shell, and stone. At 160 gm, it is lighter and smaller than the Kindle Paperwhite, while the ridged back gives it the look of a tiny piece of Rimowa-like luggage. The size means you could slip it into your bag or even your pocket (if women’s pockets ever decided to cooperate).Shikha Tripathi

The Go 6 Gen 2 has a 300 ppi e-ink display with adjustable brightness and warm lighting. It runs on Android 11 and has 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage with an expandable slot for storage in case your reading habit ever gets out of hand. Plus, it also packs a 1,500 mAh battery, which should keep it going through plenty of reading sessions without constantly reaching for the charger. The access to Google Play Store means that you can download different reading apps instead of being locked into one ecosystem.

And this might be my favourite part. It also supports the Boox InkSense Plus stylus, sold separately, turning it into a tiny digital notebook for annotations, notes, and doodles. Sue me, but I firmly believe books are meant to be messy. Underlined sentences, tiny thoughts in the margins, questionable doodles that make absolutely no sense six months later. The Go 6 Gen 2 makes that possible without feeling like you’re fighting a laggy e-ink screen every time you want to write. The note-taking app also comes with templates, including an adorable book review page where you can log the title and author, reading format, favourite quote, start and finish dates, review, and extra notes.

There are some catches. Android 11 is old, which means some newer apps may eventually stop being compatible. At around ₹19,150, it is also pricier than a basic Kindle. But if you have the money to shell out and want something compact, pretty, and more flexible than your average e-reader, the Boox makes a convincing case. And the brand clearly isn’t done with tiny e-readers. The company has teased the Boox Picco, an even smaller pocket-sized reader that looks set to compete with the likes of Xteink. There’s no price or release date yet, but you best believe my bank account is already feeling nervous.
