What’s more important in a bag: form or function? Last year, Swiss leather goods maker Peter Nitz joined forces with Adam Shulman, co-founder of California-based fine jewellery label James Banks Design, to launch a new leather goods brand, Peter & James. Their debut product, the Butterfly bag, is proof that both can coexist without compromise.
The bag, first spotted on Lily Collins in season four of Emily in Paris, is an instant statement piece. “We chose the butterfly because it seemed like a logical combination of our own brands—the leather goods part from Peter Nitz and the signature butterfly motif from James Banks,” says Nitz.
Priced at a cool €3,200 (about ₹2,88,800), it’s a splurge, but one that—depending on how functional you like your bag to be—could be worth it. A cleverly designed hinge mechanism that took two years to develop gives the bag the ability to be worn as a backpack, a shoulder bag, a top handle, a crossbody, and even as a clutch. Accessories that help with these transformations include two wings, four straps including a leather-chain and adjustable canvas strap, and a small pouch that can be attached onto the wing.
