Pack your bags, passport, and maybe a first-aid kit because a new season of The White Lotus is dropping this weekend. After Hawaii and southern Italy, the third edition of the HBO show is centred around a glamorous spa resort in Thailand (Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui and Anantara Mai Khao Villas Phuket, to be exact). It’s the perfect backdrop to the show’s twisted, binge-worthy plot and the ideal place for its characters to show off their best vacation looks. The series’ costumes have been lauded for capturing the world of white privilege and the tension between the hotel’s wealthy guests and those who work for them. Just think of Jennifer Coolidge’s flowing Dolce & Gabbana dresses in Season 2 or the mismatched style of her Gen Z assistant played by actor Haley Lu Richardson. All of this was the handiwork of costume designer Alex Bovaird who also worked on the latest season.
Just in case the show inspires you to book your own flight tickets, there’s now an easy answer to the question of what to pack. High-street giant H&M has paired up with Bovaird for a 25-piece capsule collection of dreamy, holiday-ready clothes and accessories that are the perfect accompaniment to your own vacation plans. Ruffled kaftans, dresses with cutaways, jungle prints, and crochet (lots of crochet: there are tops, beach bags, bucket hats, and more) all make an appearance. Ahead, Bovaird and Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor, H&M, share more with us about the collaboration.
Ann-Sofie, how did this collaboration come about?
Ann-Sofie Johansson: It was a proposal from Warner Bros Discovery, and we jumped at it. To do a collection together is to tap into a cultural moment. Also, it meant we could create a glamorous and dreamy resort collection.
What do you love most about the show?
AJ: There’s a thrilling awkwardness you feel. It’s not bad, but rather intriguingly uncomfortable, and you can’t stop watching it. It captures all the quirkiness of being human.
Alex, how would you describe the wardrobe for the third season of The White Lotus?
Alex Bovaird: Well, I think we’ve established this concept that when you’re going on a White Lotus vacation, you are packing purposefully and, therefore, dressing with some deliberation and hope. It is elevated vacation dressing and somewhat aspirational.
This season, the characters present a version of who they want to be. It’s a little freer and more fun, more elaborate. We had the heat of Southeast Asia and quite a specific spa location, which also influenced the wardrobe. There’s sometimes a need to be covered up with long-sleeved shirts or flowing with kaftans, and there’s a need for hats. The story has a sprinkling of darkness, mystery, and danger, too, and so it’s fun to add that to the clothing, but subtly.
