Bathroom camping = self-care? Social media thinks so…
First came silent walking. Then came bed rotting. Now it’s the turn of bathroom camping. Gen Z is turning their bathrooms into mini safe havens where they sit (sometimes for hours even) to decompress. Videos on social media show bathroom campers listening to music, watching reels, vaping or simply zoning out.
Bathroom camping is seen as a response to stressful situations and overstimulation, or an escape from noisy parties, toxic workplaces or homes. In a viral clip, TikTok user @hendo claims he’s been restroom camping for over 20 years. “There’s nothing going on in the bathroom,” he said. “There’s [sic] no windows to look at. It’s just straight—me and me—in that bathroom.”
Other users chimed in with their experiences: “My bathroom has always been my safe space and the first thing I check when moving to a new place for comfort.”
You could be crying, doing your skincare, shaving, eating cookies on the floor— nobody needs to know what’s going on in there. So no, bathroom camping doesn't necessarily mean that Gen Z has lost the plot. If anything, it's proof that they are just trying to find peace anywhere they can. Is it weird? Yes. Is it resourceful? Absolutely.
