Goodbye X, hello Bluesky

  • As the US election ended with a Republican victory, Donald Trump and another equally eccentric billionaire, Elon Musk, are in the spotlight. Due to Musk’s support (monetary and otherwise) of Trump’s campaign and his inclusion in the government, Musk-owned X saw its largest user exodus.
  • Notably, publications like The Guardian (which has 27 million followers on the platform) and celebrities like Lizzo and Elton John quit X. A toxic environment, AI training, and a change in the block feature were contributors.
  • The search for another text-based social media app has led users to alternatives like Bluesky and Instagram’s Threads.
  • According to CNET, Bluesky now has over 19 million users, and has added over 1 million users a day for the past few days, an increase of over 5.5 million users since the election on November 5.
  • Though similar to Twitter, Bluesky is a decentralised app—it is operated on independent servers, giving users more autonomy.
