Still from 'Elio'

Still replaying the Superman’s theme in your head after David Corenswet’s big debut? James Gunn clearly knows you need more, which is why Peacemaker season 2 is here with John Cena bringing back his helmet and some havoc. But that is not all. Between a Korean period comedy, a cosmic Pixar adventure, an Amanda Knox drama and a sultry Spanish adaptation, there is plenty to watch while you wait for The Summer I Turned Pretty finale and ride out the last big showers of this monsoon.

01

‘Peacemaker’ season 2 on JioHotstar

Remember when Superman was supposed to be the beacon of hope? Well, Peacemaker is back to blow that up with his own brand of questionable heroics, daddy issues and dick jokes. John Cena returns as everyone’s favourite helmeted himbo, this time hopping across the multiverse to fight himself. Also on the hit list is Rick Flag Sr., because apparently vengeance runs in the family. Strap in, DC’s messiest do-gooder is here to either save the day or completely derail it.

‘Aema’ on Netflix

Lights, camera, patriarchy! Set in 1980s Korea, Aema peels back the velvet curtain on the country’s first erotic film and the two women caught at the centre: one, the reigning screen queen; the other, an ambitious newcomer ready to risk it all. Expect glitzy retro aesthetics, razor-sharp humour and a healthy dose of industry shade. This is not just a period comedy; it is a bold spotlight on women rewriting the script in a man’s world.

‘Elio’ on Apple TV+

Pixar may be wobbling at the box office these days but on your couch, Elio still packs intergalactic wonder. Meet Elio Solis, an 11-year-old daydreamer who gets zapped into space and mistaken for Earth’s ambassador to a council of glow-in-the-dark aliens. Cue cosmic bureaucracy, bizarre galactic customs and the kind of heartfelt Pixar lessons that will make you ugly-cry. If you ever dreamed of Finding Nemo set in space, this is your jam.

‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ on JioHotstar

True crime gets the prestige TV glow-up with this limited drama starring Grace Van Patten as Amanda Knox. It has everything: a media circus that went full witch hunt, an Italian courtroom trial that played like a Netflix thriller and the very real nightmare of being wrongfully convicted. Knox herself is producing alongside Monica Lewinsky, which means the receipts are in order. Messy, maddening and impossible to look away from.

‘Hot Milk’ on Mubi

Sun, sea, sensuality and a lot of mother-daughter tension. Based on Deborah Levy’s cult-favourite novel, Hot Milk follows Sofia, played by Emma Mackey, who takes her mysteriously ailing mom to Spain, only to find herself entangled with the magnetic Ingrid (Vicky Krieps). Cue identity crises, repressed desires and sunsets so beautiful you will want to book a flight immediately. Think Call Me By Your Name with more sunscreen and a side of existential dread.
