Louboutin! Margiela! What’s not to like?

If John Galliano’s internet-breaking Maison Margiela 2024 Artisanal show from January last year still lives rent-free in your mind, we’ve got news. The dressmaker has collaborated with Christian Louboutin, the king of red soles, on two limited-edition capsule collections inspired by the show: Maison Margiela by Christian Louboutin, and Christian Louboutin by Maison Margiela. Spoiler alert: they’re both deliciously deranged.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the Marlougiela ballet flat. Think the classic Margiela Tabi split-toe but softened into a sleek, sculptural flat with Louboutin’s hallmark red bottoms. However, the cleave is crafted in a whole new way. In a departure from the traditional method of dissecting the toecap, Louboutin’s version is constructed from two individual pieces connected together. The result? A more streamlined curve that resembles the shape of a heart. It comes in two versions: glossy patent leather and sheer mesh. If you’re going to invest in one piece from this collaboration, let it be this. It’s comfortable enough to wear every day, but enough of a statement to remind everyone that you’re just a little bit unhinged—in the chicest way possible.

And while the Marlougiela flat may be the main character, the supporting cast is equally outrageous. The Maison Margiela by Christian Louboutin collection also includes vertiginous 100mm heels (including wedding shoes embellished with strass!), all with the emblematic split toe and Louboutin’s signature red soles.

But if you’re looking for something more distinctively Galliano—he loves to deconstruct, peel things apart and show their guts—the Christian Louboutin by Maison Margiela collection might be more up your alley. The capsule includes styles that are stripped off their outer layers, exposing the seams, boning, and closures that hold the shoes together. After all, these shoes are beauties both inside and out.
